4 Honest Lessons From 4 Years Running a Creative Business

creative business tips

Four years ago, we started Lume Creative.

We had a laptop, a vision, and probably too much coffee. We didn't have all the answers (spoiler: we still don't), but we were ready to help service-based businesses show up online in a way that actually reflected the quality of their work.

Fast forward to 2026, and what a ride it's been. Wins, hard seasons, a lot of learning, a lot of laughter, and yes... some tears over scope creep. This post is a little late because honestly, life has been a lot lately. But four years deserves a moment, so here we are.

The Wins

Some of our favourite moments:

Launching brands we're genuinely proud of. Designing websites that actually help businesses grow. Clients who trusted us with ideas that started as messy sketches and turned into something magical.

There's nothing quite like that moment when a project clicks into place.

the not so glamorous

The hard parts exist too. Pivots when the economy shifts, rethinking services, questioning where the business is headed, late-night strategy sessions, and the occasional "wait, did we just make the right call?" moment.

Running a creative business is messy sometimes. But it's in those messy moments that you figure out who you really are — as designers, as women, and as business owners.

what we've learned

Last year brought real clarity. We refined our messaging, strengthened our services, and got clear on the type of work we love and the people we're here to serve: service-based businesses ready to move beyond something basic and invest in brands and websites that support their growth.

Here are some of the lessons we picked up along the way:

1. Websites are the heart. They do more than exist — they build trust, communicate value, and help people take the next step. Branding and the extras support that foundation, making everything cohesive and intentional.
2. Clarity is everything. Speaking to the right people with the right words matters far more than trying to appeal to everyone. The businesses we love working with? They get it.
3. The right clients = the right energy. When trust and collaboration are on the table, the work just flows. The wrong clients can make you question everything — the right ones make you feel unstoppable.
4. Community lifts you up. Running a business can feel heavy, but the support of fellow entrepreneurs, collaborators, clients, and friends reminds us why we started.

Bonus: Growth requires pivots.
We've had to evolve our services, messaging, and approach along the way — and sometimes it was uncomfortable. But that's where the magic happens.

the takeaway

Four years later, we're grateful. For the clients, the collaborators, the friends, and the community that have been part of this journey.

Times are tough baby. But so are we.
And honestly? We're just getting started.
