Web Design Advice
What to Know Before You Redesign Your Website
Redesigning your website can feel exciting, and also totally overwhelming.
Maybe your site feels outdated. Maybe it doesn’t reflect how far your business has come. Or maybe you’ve just never really loved it. If you're feeling the pull to redo things, you're not alone.
Here’s what we recommend thinking through before you start your next web design project:
1. Figure out what’s not working, and what still is
Not every site needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Sometimes, your content is still great, it just needs better flow. Or your design is still solid, but your messaging feels a little flat.
Before you hit the reset button, take a step back and ask:
- What feels outdated?
- What are people constantly emailing us about because they can’t find it?
- What do I still like about the current site?
2. Start with strategy, not style
It’s easy to get excited about fresh fonts and colour palettes (we love that part too). But design should always follow strategy. That means thinking about:
- Who your website is for (and what they’re trying to do)
- What action you want visitors to take
- What are your service/product pillars?
3. You don’t always need more pages, just better ones
Sometimes people come to us thinking they need a 10-page overhaul. But once we look closer, it turns out a clear 3–5 page site would serve their business better.
Simple doesn’t mean less effective. It often means more focused.
4. Ask yourself: is this a design problem… or a messaging problem?
A lot of sites look fine, but they’re not converting because the words aren’t pulling their weight. The tone’s off. The value isn’t clear. The content’s outdated.
That’s why our website process always includes light copywriting, because the best design in the world can’t fix unclear messaging.
