How Custom Illustrations Add Personality to Your Brand

Custom brand illustrations
When people think about branding, they usually think about the big stuff. The logo. The colours. The fonts. And yes, those things matter a lot. But some of the most memorable brands are built in the small moments... the tiny details that make someone stop scrolling, smile, and think this feels like them.
Custom illustrations are one of those details. And if you've been sleeping on them, this is your sign to wake up.
What are custom brand illustrations?
Custom brand illustrations are hand-drawn or digitally created icons, doodles, and graphic elements that are designed specifically for your brand. We're not talking about stock icons you downloaded from a free website. We're talking about illustrations that are pulled directly from your world — the things you love, the places you work, the details your clients already associate with you.
Think a toolbox icon for a builder. A lighthouse for someone rooted in a coastal community. A street sign, a favourite drink, an animal. Small, specific, and personal.
These elements can live across your website,
social media, packaging, marketing materials, and more. And when they show up consistently, they do something really powerful — they build recognition without you having to say a word.
Why custom illustrations work so well for brand storytelling
We talk a lot about brand storytelling and the idea that your brand isn't just a logo. It's a full experience made up of your copy, your photos, your colours, your typography, your website flow, and yes, your little design details too.
Custom illustrations fit into that bigger picture in a really natural way. Here's why they work:
They add personality without overcomplicating your design.
A few well-placed doodles can warm up an entire website. They soften a brand that might otherwise feel too polished, or add visual interest to a layout that needs a little texture.
They tell your story visually.
Instead of relying solely on words to communicate who you are, illustrations let you show it. Clients who land on your website and see elements that feel personal and specific are more likely to feel a connection. And connection is what drives people to reach out.
They create consistency across every touchpoint.
When the same illustrated elements show up on your website, your Instagram highlights, your email graphics, and your packaging, it creates a cohesive brand experience that feels intentional and professional.
They make your brand genuinely memorable.
Anyone can have a clean, minimal brand. But a brand with custom details that are unique to you? That's the kind of thing people remember and talk about.
three examples of custom illustrations done right
We've had the chance to create custom illustration sets for a few really different clients, and we think seeing them side by side is a great way to show just how versatile this approach can be.
Meg Farraway Photography
The result is a set of doodles that feel completely, unmistakably Meg. They show up across her website and brand assets, adding that extra layer of personality that makes her stand out in a crowded space. For photographers especially, this kind of personal touch can go a long way in attracting clients who feel aligned with
who you are... not just what you shoot.
Meg is a photographer who wanted her brand to feel personal, warm, and deeply connected to the things she loves. For her custom illustration set, we pulled from the world she lives and works in. The beach, travel, her camera, ice cream, paw prints for her puppy, bows, and a little whimsy.

Dan Kiekens, Strathroy Realtor
Real estate is an industry where so many brands look... well, exactly the same. Dan wanted something different. As a Strathroy-based realtor known for building community and making real estate feel approachable, his brand needed to reflect that. Bold and modern, but warm and rooted.
We designed a full brand, website and collateral suite for Dan that included custom doodles representing familiar pieces of Strathroy. The kind of local details that immediately signal to his audience that he's not just a realtor, he's
their
realtor. Someone who knows the community, loves it, and is proud to work in it. The illustrations became a way to communicate all of that without a single word of copy.
Beach Day
Beach Day is a boutique in Saugatuck, Michigan offering curated apparel, home goods, and coastal lifestyle pieces. Owner Crista had a clear vision. She wanted laid-back, sun-washed, effortlessly beachy. Our job was to bring it to life visually.
Custom illustrations were a key part of Beach Day's brand refresh. Paired with a full identity suite and packaging design, the illustrated elements helped capture that coastal chic feeling that the brand is built around. For a lifestyle and product-based business like Beach Day, illustrations do double duty — they enhance the brand experience online and make packaging and physical touchpoints feel special and cohesive.

How to think about custom illustrations for your own brand
If you're wondering whether custom illustrations could work for your brand, here are a few questions worth sitting with:
What are you known for?
Think about the things your clients already associate with you. Your location, your style, your personality, your process. Those are your starting points.
What makes you different?
In a sea of similar businesses, illustrations are a low-effort, high-impact way to signal that your brand is thoughtful and specific toyou.
Where would they live?
Consider your website icons, social media highlight covers, email graphics, packaging, stickers, or even GIFs. The more places your illustrations can show up, the more value they add.
Ready to add some personality to your brand?
Custom illustrations can be added as part of a full branding or website project, or as a standalone add-on if you already have a brand foundation in place. They're one of those investments that tend to surprise people — because once you see them in context, it's hard to imagine your brand without them.
