Your Website Traffic Dropped and It's Not Your Fault

SEO and website strategy for service based businesses

If your website traffic has tanked this year and you haven't touched a single thing on your site, you're not losing your mind. Something did change, and it wasn't you.

What is Google AI Overview, exactly?

It's the AI generated answer Google now shows above the regular search results for a huge chunk of searches. People ask their question, get a summary right there on the results page, and never click through to anyone's website. Not yours, not your competitor's, nobody's.

That's not a small tweak. That's the biggest shift in how people find business since mobile search took over.

Do I still need SEO if Google shows AI Answers?

Yes. Just not in the way it used to.

Ranking first used to mean winning the click. Now it means something closer to winning the citation. Google's AI still has to pull its answer from somewhere, and it's pulling from sites that are clear, well organized, and genuinely useful to read. Vague, padded, keyword-stuffed pages don't make the cut. Neither do sites that are slow enough that Google barely bothers crawling them in the first place.

Here's the part that actually works in your favour: a small business that answers one specific question really well can out-rank a much bigger competitor for that question. AI search rewards specificity and real expertise over ad spend. That's an advantage most big brands can't buy their way into.

What this means for your website.

A website built five years ago (or, let's be honest, one built off a $50 template with no strategy behind it) was never designed with any of this in mind. It was designed to look nice and hold your contact info.

That's not enough anymore.
A site that's actually working for you in 2026 needs to load fast, since Google can't cite what it can't crawl properly. It needs to answer the real questions you clients ask, in plain language, on pages built around those questions. It needs to be structured clearly enough that both a human and AI can find the answer in a few seconds. And it needs to sound like an actual expert, not a template full of placeholder text nobody got around to replacing.

This is exactly where a DIY builder or an untouched template start to show its limits. It's not that DIY is bad. It's that DIY plus zero strategy is what's getting filtered out right now, while businesses with intentional,
well built sites are the ones showing up.

What to actually do about it.

You don't need to panic or rebuild your whole site overnight.
Start here:

  • Check your load speed. A sluggish site is costing you before content quality even enters the conversation.
  • Take an honest look at your service pages. Do they actually answer the specific questions you would ask, or are they vague "we do great work" filler?
  • Keep your Google Business Profile filled in and active too, since local AI results lean on it heavily.

And ask yourself the real questions: does your site sound like an expert, or like everyone else in your industry? If you can't answer that with confidence, that's usually the first sign it's worth a second set of eyes, which is exactly what our free Website Audit is for. No strings, just a clear look at where things stand.

Let's take a real look at yours.

We're not going to pretend this stuff isn't confusing, because it is. But it's exactly the kind of thing we live in every day, and we'd rather walk you through what's actually happening with your site than let you keep guessing.

So, is your website built for how people are actually searching right now, or is it still working off 2021 rules?
